Northwest Christian University to Award Pastor Nancy Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree

Rev. Nancy Gowler JohnsonNorthwest Christian University, a private Christian liberal arts college in Eugene, Oregon, will award Pastor Nancy the Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, at its 2015 Spring Commencement in recognition of her distinguished leadership within the church and the community.  Northwest Christian University has historic roots within the three strands of the Restoration Movement [The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), The Christian Churches, and The Churches of Christ].  Originally established as Eugene Divinity School in 1895, the university now has an enrollment of over 700 students and offers undergraduate, graduate programs and adult degree majors.

Pastor Nancy will offer the commencement address at the May 9th ceremony. She is being recognized for her fifteen year pastorate at First Christian Church of Puyallup, her civic advocacy for the homeless, her commitment to civic engagement as a member of the Puyallup Planning Commission and her work in the Northwest Region.  Her ministry has been marked by a passion for creative, participatory worship that is grounded in a vision of justice, peacemaking and spiritual formation.

While living in Eugene she was on the staff of the University’s Development department.  She was ordained into Christian ministry in 1998 at Eugene First Christian Church where she was a member.
