122015 – In Spite of Nostalgia: a fierce love

It’s easy to get lost in the sweet sentimentality of the Christmas season.  We may hum Away in the Manger or Silent Night as we leave our worship services, content to keep Jesus safely in a stable. Trouble is the gospels won’t let him stay there.  Mary sings not a lullaby but an anthem of revolution. John the Baptist shouts until he’s blue in the face of repentance and right living.  On this fourth Sunday of Advent the Scripture readings confront us with a God who (much like Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia) is not safe, but is good.
