In our reading from Galatians 5:1, 13-25, the Apostle Paul, self-declared “slave of Christ” presses the early church in Galatia to consider the freedom that have been given by God through Christ. Freedom is not just another word for “nothing left to lose”, rather the freedom Paul speaks of is given so that we might live differently. God frees us to live in the power of the Spirit. Lives animated by the Spirit are contagious–overflowing with generosity, patience, kindness, joy, peace, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
