When times are dark and the future seems grim, the temptation is strong to pull the covers over our heads and ignore what is going on around us. In today’s reading from the letter to the church in Rome the Apostle Paul flips on all the lights, turns up the stereo and makes a holy ruckus. Wake up! Pay attention! Don’t be distracted by little things. God is doing saving work, right here, right now.
Once we wipe the sleep from our eyes, we can see in a way we couldn’t before. The vision that Isaiah saw, of the holy mount of the Lord as a source of joy and peace, may not be fully present in our lifetime. But with confidence we can join with Martin Luther King, Jr. and declare, “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”
