Caravaggio painted The Rest on the Flight into Egypt in 1596-97. In it he imagines the new parents Mary & Joseph weary and worn down and the young child Jesus resting contentedly on his mother’s lap. In the middle of the painting, dividing Joseph and Mary into two separate sections, there stands an angel, with its back to the viewer, playing a violin. Joseph sits on a sack, barefooted, holding a music score for the angel. It is an intriguing, puzzling painting.
