During this time of worship you may wish to have a candle to light and to have bread and a beverage for communion — whatever you have available will be sufficient.

Acknowledgement of Land

(An act towards reconciliation)

For thousands of years, First Nations people have walked on this land; their relationship with the land is at the center of their lives and spirituality.  We are gathered on the traditional territory of the Coastal Salish and Puyallup people, and we acknowledge their stewardship of this land throughout the ages.

GATHERING & EXPLORING

Set apart your worship space by lighting a candle along with the video clip.  The light of the candle symbolizes the presence of the Holy wherever we are.

You can find all of the lectionary readings for Sunday, August 30, 2020 here:  https://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/texts.php?id=157

Scriptural Reflection        Excerpt from Aurora Leigh (poem, 1864)

“Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God,
But only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.”

― Elizabeth Barrett Browning

A burning bush in the midst of rush hour in Washington D.C., 2017
World renowned violinist Joshua Bell plays incognito, dressed as a street musician.  Of the 1100 people who passed by during the 45 minutes that he flawlessly performed several of the most beautiful pieces of classical music ever written, how many people stopped and listened?  How many people “took off their shoes”?
